2012 was "the year of Mercator". To celebrate 500 years of Gerard Mercator, born in Rupelmonde, Belgium, in 1512, the city Kruibeke and Rupelmonde organised a range of events. I was challenged to make a garment using paper maps. I wanted to create something textured and light, but also elegant and an outfit that at first sight didn't look like it was made from paper.
